When you arrive in the United Kingdom at Heathrow Airport or any other international airport, before collecting your luggage you will go through the Immigration Counter where you will be asked to show your passport and questions will be asked; what your purpose of visit is, how long you intend to stay, how much money you have, whether you have a return ticket, etc. If you are a tourist you will normally be given a 6 months visitor's visa. However, if you are a young man or a lady travelling to the UK by yourself, they might ask a lot of extra questions and check you thoroughly to make sure you are a genuine visitor to this country and you are not here to work. To be able to work in the UK, you are required to have a "work permit" which should be applied for from the Department of Employment before coming to the UK. This normally takes 2/3 months and it is not easy to obtain. If you are coming to the UK as a student then you will need a student visa. It is best to apply at the immigration at the airport on your arrival. You will need an acceptance letter from your school or college also confirming that the fee has been paid and proof that you have sufficient funds. You can of course apply for the visa after you have entered the UK either by sending the application to the Home Office or taking it in person. However, this is more complicated and you are likely to have problems at the airport on arrival. We
