Dear Student,
We are pleased to welcome you to International House in Torquay on the
English Riviera, and in the Georgian city of Bath. Both centres are
owned and operated by the WELS group of schools.
The WELS group of International House Schools is part of the
International House World Organisation, one of the world’s leading
language teaching organisations.
We are delighted to work in partnership with Mitsuba Associates
in promoting our English language schools abroad. We offer year round
adult centres in Bath and Torquay in the UK, Sydney in Australia and San
Diego in the USA. We also offer summer courses with activities for
teenagers.
Our Torquay school is located five minutes from the town centre in a
spacious villa with attractive terrace and gardens and a heated swimming
pool which is popular in the summer. Students can have lunch at our
school restaurant run by our friendly chef, Bruce, who offers freshly
made hot food and a selection of sandwiches and salads daily. We have a
modern internet centre for student use and also offer wireless
connection for students with their own laptops.
Our staff are experienced and well-trained. We are fortunate to have on
our staff a Japanese national, Makiko Caul, who is always available to
help Japanese students settle in, and give them advice on every Aspect
of living and studying in the UK.
We offer a range of language course options including the popular
English and Voluntary work.
Students follow a programme of English in the morning and in the
afternoon have a choice of voluntary work options. Through unpaid work
students gain more insight into British society and gain more English
practice at the same time. Working, for example, in a charity shop,
students can meet a cross section of the public and also perform a
valuable service for the local community.
Our language programmes are not limited to working hard in the
classroom. We also make sure that there is access to a variety of social
and sporting activities run by our Student Services Manager, Peter Jones
, from theatre trips or excursions to the beautiful Devon countryside to
Friday afternoon soccer matches for both sexes. Girls enjoy playing
soccer too!
We attract students from all over the world and are well known for our
excellent nationality mix. Students who study here not only gain a high
level of competence in an important foreign language but also make
lasting friendships with fellow students all over the world.
Our students are comfortably housed in local host families not far from
the school by our accommodation staff, Rachel and Debbie, who visit all
our host families and make sure high standards are maintained. If a
student is not happy in their homestay it is school policy to change the
accommodation without question.
We look forward to welcoming you to International House where our
students are at the heart of everything we do.
