Dear Student,
The Centre for Language Study at Leeds Metropolitan University works in partnership with
Mitsuba Associates, who assist our Japanese clients. They are there to help you through the
difficult decisions you need to take when choosing a place to live and a course to study. We
believe they are effective counsellors, and able to assist you in your application process. -
I'd like to explain a little about why what we think we have to offer international students.
Firstly, we are a friendly centre located on a very attractive University campus. As part of the
University we can provide all our students with excellent study facilities (for example, we
have large computing laboratories which give you free access to email and the internet), and
really good sports facilities (including heated swimming pool, indoor and outdoor tennis
courts, squash, badminton and a multigym). Many of our student find that by using these
facilities, or by joining one of the many Student Union clubs, they get really good
opportunities to meet with British students studying at the University.
Most of our staff have lived and worked in other countries (and we have teachers from lots of
countries teaching other languages), so we understand how hard it can be when you arrive and
everything is so different. We also know how important the homestay arrangements are -living with a British family has lots of advantages, but we know we have to select our
families carefully so they are warm, welcoming, and understanding. In Leeds we are lucky
because there are few other schools using host families, so we can find the best!
Leeds itself is a great city to live in (it's the fastest growing commercial city in Europe, with
very lively social and cultural activities). Of course, it is not London - but it is cheaper to livein, easier to travel around in, and very central - so you can get to London for sight-seeing in
about 2 hours, or to Edinburgh in about 2.5 hours, and to lots of other places in England very
easily. Leeds and Manchester airports are so close - making it easy for you when you arrive to
get directly to your host families, and making it easy for you to take weekend or vacation trips
to any European capital city.
We know that making the right choice is not easy - but we believe we have so much to offer
that we are the right choice for many students. And many students who study here tell us that
we were the right choice for them.
I look forward to welcoming you to Leeds one day.
