INDEPENDENT SCHOOLS

By choosing an independent school in the UK you are entering your child upon a path which is steeped in a long tradition but which will also provide your child with the skills, attitudes and attributes essential to be successful in the 21st century. It is an education that has been followed by the monarchy, captains of industry and some of our greatest minds.

It is the nature of the independent schools that each will differ from the other and this is their strength. It does mean however that you must be sure that the school you choose is the appropriate one for your child.

It is easy to identify differences in organization but the values and ethos that a school endorses are more subtle.

Of course, the student for whom English is not the native tongue, will require additional language teaching support and most independent schools provide this by arrangement.

All schools will offer the national examination, the General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE), to the students when they are around 16 years old. The average student will take from 6 to 9 subjects. Upon their successful completion the student can then study Advanced level (A Level) courses and sit the exams after 2 years of study. At this level the system is very specialized and the student will usually study about three subjects which will determine his/her choice of university or higher education course in the UK.
