Functional English
Dear Student,
As Principal of the Functional English school of English I am happy to recommend
Mitsuba Associates to advise and assist you in making your choice of school in Britain the correct one. We work in
partnership with
Mitsuba Associates to make your experience of learning English effective, and to provide a safe and caring environment for study.
Let me tell you something about our school. We are based in Whitby, a historic Yorkshire town on the North East coast of England between Middlesbrough and Scarborough. It is a town of around 14,000 people and is situated at the heart of the North York Moors National Park. It has a three-kilometre stretch of sandy beach that is a popular attraction during the summer months and there is an attractive harbour, which is used by both fishing boats and sailing craft. The school is residential and situated in an attractive redbrick Victorian building with a large garden, 500 metres from the beach and town
centre.
Most of our students choose this school for its atmosphere of international Christian friendship - we aim to make everyone equally at home and we welcome students of all religious faiths or those with none. Students can choose to attend our 25-minute service of worship at the start of each day, which is led by both staff and students, and we encourage links with local churches. There is a weekly fellowship meeting where Christian speakers share their experience of missionary work; Bible study classes; and help for students preparing to enter a Bible College.
However, all these Christian activities are optional, and students can instead choose practical classes in cookery, photography or computers as well as special subject classes in Business, Study or Medical English. We organise many opportunities for all students to meet British people through home visits, international evenings, sports, dancing and country walks. The community in Whitby has for many years welcomed students with open arms and people have made lasting friendships here.
The school is well equipped with a language laboratory and listening centre as well as a computer room where students can work on guided activities outside class times and which provides email and Internet access. We prepare and enter
students for a wide range of exams e.g. the Cambridge First Certificate and Advanced English, Business English, IELTS, and
TOEIC.
We are a small and very friendly school with between 40 and 70 students at one time and we have a very good mix of nationalities. We normally have students from Switzerland, The Netherlands, Germany, Japan, Spain, Italy, Norway, Korea and Finland, to name only the main countries, and we encourage international friendship. We ask that all students speak English in the school, all the time!
If this sounds interesting to you, then please contact
Mitsuba Associates for more details.
