Universities offer courses at Higher Education level (higher than A level GCE / post 18 years).

Colleges can be specialist places at Higher Education level. e.g. Art College (post 18 years). They can also be a part of a university or education establishments that offer Further Education (post 16 years).

All British Universities, with one exception are state universities, although they will have a variety of different foundations. There are private colleges however which offer American academic courses and other establishments which offer diverse areas of study.

For foreign students, it is essential to acquire a certain level of English to enter university or college. To facilitate entry some establishments operate Access courses, usually of a year's duration, to prepare the student for undergraduate study and the required exams.
